Winner of numerous awards in recent years, among them number 1 rankings from CNN Worldwide (Best Spa in Asia 2004) and Spa Asia Magazine (No. 1 Destination Resort & Spa in Asia), the stunningly-located Ritz-Carlton Bali Thalasso and Spa is everything one might hope for from such a prestigious name. Kabar was invited to sample a sunset treatment...
Perhaps the brightest jewel in the crown of this superlative spa is its vast Aquatonic seawater therapy pool. At 650m2 and containing an unfathomable (ahem) 700,000,000 litres of seawater, this is the largest open-air Aquatonic pool in the world. And if one is going to build the largest such pool in the world, where better to position it than on the cliffs of Jimbaran Bay, in a spot that lays claim to some of the finest panoramic views of the Indian Ocean to be had in Bali (which is saying something). Seawater has been used as a therapy since Egyptian times. The Greek word ‘thalassa’, meaning sea, gave rise to the term thalassotherapy, developed by a French doctor in the 19th century. The benefits of bathing in seawater stem from the similarity between the mineral composition of seawater and that of human blood plasma and thalassotherapy incorporates the use of seawater and marine products in a variety of activities including baths, jets, showers, massage and wraps, and is particularly useful in promoting detoxification, slimming and weight loss and treating cellulite and fluid retention. The Aquatonic pool combines long-established European seawater therapies with the technology of a series of jets, currents, counter currrents, showers and bubble baths. This almost effortless and immensely enjoyable two-hour workout improves blood circulation and targets specific parts of the body, burning 500 calories per session. The water is warmed to optimum temperatures to rebalance mineral deficiencies and maximise its natural curative and preventive properties. Specially targetted jets massage individual parts of the body as you move around the pool, stopping to rest on bubble beds and stand under a cascade of water from an elephant’s trunk that intensely massages your shoulders and neck. The tingling sensation of your capillaries kicking into action lets you know that it’s working and you leave, 120 minutes and a glorious sunset later, with skin smooth as a baby’s and a lazy smile on your face.
